Randy Manning, Choir Director![]()
The influence of music in Randy Manning's life goes back to his childhood. His grandmother was a music teacher in the Cincinnati School system. She had beautiful instruments in her home, including a grand piano. During summer visits, the family would sit at the piano with her while she played children's songs - and they were expected to sing along! Randy has fond memories of these times.
Randy's grandmother's maiden name was Fillmore. The Fillmore family in Cincinnati was very musical. Her uncles owned the Fillmore Music House during the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. James Henry Fillmore arranged more than 1500 marches and wrote 4 or 5 hymns, two of which you may have heard of; "Purer in Heart, O God" and "Beautiful Garden of Prayer".
As Randy grew older, he became involved in various school musical programs. In high school, he sang in the choir and madrigals and held the lead role in the senior high musical. He lost interest in music in his late teens and pursued other interests in college. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Evansville. After working in the "real" world for fifteen years, he realized his true desire was to have a career in music. He was accepted to the University of Indianapolis where he obtained a degree in voice and general music. After graduation, he was Director of Music at St. John United Church of Christ in Cumberland, Indiana. He gained six years of experience choosing music, rehearsing with and directing several different ensembles.
Randy is currently establishing and developing lasting relationships with his new church family as the Choir Director at Cherry Grove United Methodist Church.
